I'm screwed since most the "old anime" i've watched is from 80 to mid 90's :S

It's been mentioned but Macross Plus really is a must watch for mid-90's show. I always watched Robotech, DBZ, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, and whatever was out there on occasion but it was MacPlus that made me absolutely love anime.

Other recs:
Gunsmith Cats - Gun and muscle car porn.
Battle Angel Alita - cyberpunk bounty hunters.
Great Teacher Onizuka - ex-bosozoku turned teacher.
Master Keaton - ex-SAS archaeology professor.
You're Under Arrest (OAV) - female cops :3
Tenchi Muyo (Everything) - One of the original harem shows.
Ranma 1/2 (Everything) - Another classic and the OAVs are terrific.
Lodoss Wars (OAV) - I'm going to marry Deedlit one of these days... Oh wait, I just did :D
Photon - so good.
DNA^2 - MEGA-PLAYBOY! Also, Karin <3
Kite - action porn and actual porn...

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. There's just a lot of good shows in that era, more than I can recall.

Also, why not just date the topic and have it just be like "Anime before the year 2000"? Then we can get rid of generalizing terms like classic, old school, and retro.

@Gunsmith Cats: Awesome mini-series. Pretty ladies in skimpy clothes shooting people ftw.

@GTO: This is next to Macross and Lodoss in the animes that have taken me over 10 years to watch. XD

@Tenchi Muyo: Love this show so much. Epic nostalgia. And, while I enjoyed Tokyo, it's probably my least favourite of the incarnations. Universe is at the top.

@Ranma: Is it horrendous for me to say that I had no idea there was an anime for this until recently? I should just stop trying at anything forever...

I haven't watched but read all of those. Except for Battle Angle Alita, I have only read parts of that. Still awesome and I have to admit I read them all at the bookstore. Only DNA^2 has a place on my bookshelf. The German version of Shonen-Jump had it all. Really, really great stuff!

GTO is the greatest motivational manga ever!

If we're rockin' lists I might as well contribute. Some favorite 90s anime:

Macross Plus
Initial D
Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Magic Knight Rayearth
Lain
Mononoke Hime
Agent Aika
Video Girl Ai
Spriggan
Berserk
X
Whisper of the Heart
Gunsmith Cats
Kare Kano
Slayers
Cardcaptor Sakura
Tenchi Muyo
Ranma 1/2
Sentimental Journey
Battle Angel Alita

Surely forgetting a lot more. Those were a few of the ones that I really liked though.

I watched like the first 10 episodes of ranma and felt like I got the gist of it. Is it really necessary to watch any more?

To me, the best parts of Ranma were the OAVs. One Who Flew over Kuno's Nest and Desperately Seeking Shampoo were my favorite ones. Also, The dub for series was spectacular because the guy who voiced Kuno was awesome.

since there is a pile of people in here that love Tenchi (myself included) it's time for the obligatory 'Who is your favorite Tenchi girl' question.

I'll start with the unpopular my answer!

My favorite is and always shall be Ayeka. I think she's misunderstood a lot of the time and actually has some great qualities.  I have probably 5 or 6 original cels of her from various series. A few even framed.

It will always and forever be Ryoko and it has to be the original English voice actress (Petrea Burchard). She is just brash and brazen and her voice I just so adore. While I had always been a fan of Ryoko from the start it was the movie Tenchi Forever that sealed it for me.

Was Tenchi Forever the one where Ayeka somehow ended up as a waitress? All I remember was Tenchi was in trouble and Ayeka couldn't get to him fast enough, only Ryoko could. And Ayeka said something along the lines of "Go to him" so he could be rescued even though she couldn't help. Oh man, heartbreaking.

Probably Sasami. I tend to like the responsible, got-their-shit-together characters. :/ At least as far as girls are concerned.

don't hate

I really loved The Vision of Escaflowne. I went to my library and they had a VHS of the first 3 episodes but nothing after that. I was talking to my friend about it and he said he had the entire series on DVD and let me borrow it. I really liked all the characters and the story. I now want to find the DVD's and watch it again.

I just went and looked at Tenchi to see the characters and holy crap I had a "This is totally retro goggles I do not remember the art looking this ass when I watched it before." Moment.

So ya I am totally going to go with Ryoko because she was dominant. I either like girls like Aoi in Ai Yori Aoshi who are SUPER FUCKING SUBMISSIVE, girls like Lala in To Love-Ru who don't have a brain or girls like Ryoko who are super dominant.

Hmm, favorite Tenchi girl...  SO HARD!

Ayeka - doesn't do much for me.  All yours, goldfish.

Kiyone - hot but don't remember her too well.  Need to watch Universe again.

Sasami - what Topher said, also stars in some sweet spin off magical girl shows.

Ryoko - hot, mischievous, dominant, in control of her sexuality.  All awesome traits. (also laser sword)

Mihoshi - mmmmmmmmmyeah

Washu - BEST TENCHI GIRL.
